Allergic reactions and coping in infants and children

How do I know if my child is having an allergic reaction?

Be aware of the following symptoms of possible allergies, especially when they appear suddenly:

  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Skin changes such as rash, redness or hives and/or pallor or blueness
  • Swelling of the lips or tongue
  • Sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose
  • Tight throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarse voice
  • Weak pulse, shock symptoms
  • Vomiting, diarrhea (if severe or combined with other symptoms)
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Feelings of “doom,” confusion, lethargy, or agitation

Babies may also have other allergy symptoms, such as:

  • Fidgety, irritable, or inconsolable crying
  • Drool suddenly
  • Abnormal sleepiness

There are many things that can cause allergic reactions.

1.Food

  • Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to introduce peanut-containing foods after their baby has tried low allergy risk foods as an allergen prevention strategy for high-risk infants”
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Tree nuts such as walnuts, pistachios, pecans and cashews
  • Shellfish (such as shrimp, lobster)
  • Fish such as tuna, salmon, cod (although, like with peanuts, there is some evidence that consuming fish early in life may help prevent allergic diseases such as asthma and eczema).

2.Insect bite

  • Bees
  • Wasps
  • Hornets
  • Yellow jackets
  • Fire ants

3.Restoratives

Antibiotics and antiseizure medicines are some of the more common medicines that cause anaphylaxis. However, any medicine, even aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, have the potential to cause severe reactions.

4.Others

In rare cases, anaphylactic shock may be associated with some kind of exercise.

Be prepared: Develop an emergency care plan for allergies and allergic reactions.

If your child is at high risk for allergies, it is recommended that you have an allergy and anaphylaxis emergency plan. Your pediatrician can help you and your family use the plan with anyone caring for your child.
